Left for dead after being struck by her jealous fiancée the Count Belfiore, with whom she is still in love, Violante disguises herself as Sandrina, the gardener. She thus hopes to reconquer her lover, who, believing her to be dead, seeks solace with Arminda. Around them swirls a confusion of lovers in which everyone desires someone who desires someone else! The reunion of the two lovers will lead them to the threshold of madness, but this test allows them to recover their true feelings and to reconcile their love.

It is a 19-year-old Mozart who here composed already his eighth lyric work! The libretto reserves the lion’s share to surprising – and improbable! – twists of fate, as is the manner of opera buffa. It nonetheless allows the young composer a sort of trial run for Le nozze. The ingredients that make for the subtlety of this crazy day already make their modest appearance: deception, volatility and ambiguity of sentiments, the perfect night to test the heart, forgiveness and reconciliation. Musically, the young prodigy, who had just attained an essential milestone in his musical art with the Symphonies 25, 28 and 29, here takes full possession of his dramatic genius: richness and complexity of ensemble writing, which moves the action forward and shapes the characters, maestria in the contrast between comedy and drama, and transitioning from one to the other in an equivocal manner that suddenly expresses the true ambivalence of human feelings.

Rare are the opportunities to hear Emmanuelle Haïm and Le Concert d’Astrée in the classic repertoire. Yet in Le Nozze di Figaro in Lille in 2008, in the Mass in C or Haydn’s Creation last season at Dijon, they have shown the pertinence and the mastery of their approach. With David Lescot, stage director but also dramatic author and musician fascinated by the relationship between text and music, they invite you to discover this adolescent Mozart, already unique and still full of the unbridled fire and freshness that belongs only to youth.
