David Rolland is known for his provocative performances that break down dance movement in unexpected ways. In this theatrical and plastic choreographic self-portrait, he proposes to run through a catalogue of heterogenic sources of inspiration. In filigree, he calls into question the status of the artist. Are fairies perched over his cradle to gratify him with a gift? In an attempt to answer this question, without taking himself too seriously, David Rolland uses circumvented means to recompose those sources that provoke in him a state of reverie: on a tread mill he recycles the choreographies of Madonna, taking the opportunity to recite bits from a séance with a clairvoyant, recorded 20 years earlier, to have some fun with fortuitous coincidence. Then watch the projectors dance as they reveal a collection of obsessional mental images: films such as Blade Runner or Blue Velvet, music by Gershwin or Rameau, ghostly memories from past performances, exhibitions, readings …

By associating all these different references, the elements of a supernatural tale begin to take their place. The self-portrait dissipates to leave in its place what David Rolland defines as the « contemplative fantastic on the way to revelation », inviting the spectator to share in this state of letting go. What does this say about our capacity to escape from ourselves?
