The Schumann Quartet — founded in 2012 by three brothers of the same name — is part of a new generation of ensembles that has no fear of atypical programming and audacious juxtapositions.
It is also a quartet that attaches a primordial importance, given the growing digital dematerialisation of music, to the live concert experience. This is perfectly illustrated by the extraordinary recital that awaits us for their first concert in Dijon, weaving periods and styles into a marvellously intelligent whole for greater discovery and amazement. The five fugues of Bach transcribed for string quartet by Mozart will serve as the transitional points for five scores, from Mendelssohn to Glass by way of Shostakovich and Webern, that otherwise seem to have no evident correlation. Only the intelligence and musicality of these four bows can conjugate such leaps with such virtuosity!
