BEETHOVEN String quartet in G major op. 18 n°2
SHOSTAKOVICH String quartet n°1 in C major op. 49
TCHAIKOVSKY String quartet n°1 in D major op. 11

Founded in 1946, the Fine Arts Quartet is today one of the oldest in activity. For this exceptional concert, their programme honours one of the first attempts by the great composers in this difficult genre, which requires unrelenting inspiration. Beethoven’s Quartet op. 18 n°2 seems to pay homage, before the composer began to advance into unexplored territories, to the classic form that Haydn had brought to perfection. It wasn’t until 1938 that Shostakovich dared tackle this genre, in which he would complete another 14 major scores. He, too, seems to have been drawn in by Haydn, and yet his First Quartet never hesitates to test the limits of the classic structure, With his opus 11, Tchaikovsky signed the first great quartet from a Russian composer: of grand mastery and authentic Slavic flavour, it breathed into the genre a new wind from the East.
