After La Mer, Le Sacre du printemps and the violin concerto "To the memory of an angel", are there any challenges left for Les Dissonances, the ensemble in residence at the Dijon Opera? Certainly the symphonic music of Mahler, kneaded by its astonishing and intransigent subjectivity, could remain yet another summit to conquer for this ensemble without conductor, where each musician shares in the collective artistic responsibility.

Mahler’s First Symphony is a deep dive into a whole new world, familiar yet troubling. Here nature is more mysterious than ever and Frere Jacques is transformed into a dark and sarcastic funeral march ever on the cusp of humour. As an introduction to this astounding score, Webern’s Passacaglia reveals the Viennese composer at the twilight transition from post-romantic to modern.
