Carte Blanche called upon the French choreographer François Chaignaud for this show presented at the Bergen Festival in 2018. “In slang, soufflette means to blow smoke from one person’s mouth to another’s. Soufflettewill be an exchange of smoke through the centuries. And if a medieval air passes between your lips?”Soufflette is a dance exploration that mixes materials, from the vocal polyphony of the 12th and 13th centuries to silence, from the sacred to the profane, from the austerity of woollen clothing — a monk’s habit, or a coat of mail ? — to luxuriant floral costumes, in a fascinating voyage conjugating sensual rigour of movement and the force of song:  a musical and choreographic voyage that blows new life into medieval traditions and reconciles the ancient and the modern, light and dark, the natural and the artificial. Within this rich and burgeoning universe, where the primitive forces of body and spirit resound, François Chaignaud sets his name to a bewitching and intoxicating show in the form of a festive ritual full of life, song and the delights of dance.
