DIJON OPERA CHOIR
PIANO
Marie Duquesnois

Just as his reputation was beginning to take off, the young Antonín Dvořák in 1875 suffered a terrible family tragedy: his new-born daughter Josefa died suddenly. The Stabat Mater was composed in the wake of her death, in an original version for soloists, choir and piano. It is clear that the liturgical text carried a deeply personal message for the composer. The universal expression of the collective suffering of Christians over the body of their Saviour reflects the unrelenting individual suffering of the composer. The work exudes dramatic urgency, emotional incandescence and wrenching spontaneity, all the while retaining an extraordinary modesty. It is to this original version with piano that this concert of the Dijon Opera Choir is devoted, a version that dives even more deeply into the agonizing and inconsolable intimacy of a father’s shattered heart.
