For this first rendezvous with Dissonances in chamber music formation, it is almost a return to their roots: Richard Strauss’ Metamorphosenwas the score that first brought the musicians together back in 2004. Completed after the end of  World War II in Switzerland, where the composer had sought refuge, the work is as much a farewell to a past world as it is an intense and anxious questioning about the world to come. Alfred Schnittke’s String trio is one of the Russian composer’s masterpieces. Commissioned by the Alban Berg Society of Vienna, it provided Schnittke an opportunity to delve back into the happy years of his youth in that city. Infused with a deep nostalgia, jostling between tonality and atonality, marrying the beauty of the classic Viennese style with expressionist lyricism, this subtle and intelligent work is to be discovered without fail.
