    FRANCIS POULENC
Histoire de Babar, le petit éléphant

This classic of children’s music was born out of unexpected yet endearing circumstances. In the summer of 1940, just after being mobilized for military service, Francis Poulenc visited his cousins in Brive-la-Gaillarde. While playing a piece on the piano, the children of the family removed his score and replaced it with a book, shouting: "Play us this!" The book was The Story of Babar. Poulenc played along with the children’s game, and began to improvise on the stories in the book. At the end of the war, the composer, thinking fondly back to the event, decided to give it more constructed form and made an entire work, with the success that we all know. Following the text of the story as closely as possible, Poulenc delivers music that is evocative, tender and remarkably subtle, that immediately captures and keeps one’s attention and emotions. It is the original version for piano that has been chosen for this concert aimed for all ages.
