The day after Saint Valentine’s, the Lyon National Orchestra and the young conductor Karina Canellakis, laureate of the Georg Solti Prize in 2016, will deploy all the effusion and drama of the most absolute passionate love! On the one side, two mythic couples exalted by two composers who personify romanticism. First, the triumphal arch of the prelude to Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, rising out of the lone murmur of cellos before being carried onto a swell of emotion to the very point of ecstasy. Then Tchaikovsky’s tragic overture inspired by the two star-crossed lovers of Verona, whose visceral familial hatreds leads them inexorably to their deaths. On the other side, under the bow of Frank Peter Zimmerman, we have the most classical of romantic concertos, at times tender and elegiac, dreamy and sentimental, fantastic and voluble, as only can be the most endearing declarations of love.
