Zylan ne chantera plus

Diana Soh
about

Ages 14 and up

Zylan, a budding pop star suspected of homosexuality, is arrested as he is about to attend a wedding. This highly original opera, on a subject of great relevance today, takes us on a voyage from the tangible to the dream, and the human.

On stage we see a lone man enclosed in a small space whose walls are made of bars, like a cage. Three musicians accompany him on electric guitar, cello and percussion: midway between opera and theatre, the score mixes dialogue, song and music to touch the most intimate emotions. In small format, performed by a new generation of artists who seek to make opera accessible to all, the work addresses essential societal themes, such as discrimination and homophobia. In line with the didactic works of Bertold Brecht and Kurt Weill, its empathy resonates within us, allowing the spectator to vicariously experience this poignant story: yet another facet of opera today.
